I am more interested in the future than the past, because that is where I intend to live.

THE LOCATION

HELLWINKEL TERASSEN – WOLFSBURG

With the 2012 housing construction program, Wolfsburg is aiming to build 6,000 new apartments by 2020. The new Hellwinkel Quarter will contribute 720 residential units towards this target. On the site of two adjoining allotment areas in the Hellwinkel district, an urban, social, ecological and economic development will be realised. Building on their successful competition entry, the architectural practice SMAQ have worked up a socially and ecologically ambitious master plan, an exemplar centered on the major themes of "Landscape and Nature", "Diversity and Mix", "Neighborhood" and "Ecology".

The Hellwinkel site is located on the eastern edge of Wolfsburg, about 1.5 to 2.0 km away from the city centre. To the southeast, an adjacent green area connects the site to the open landscape near Nordsteimke and to the South through the forest to the natural landscape of the Hasselbach Valley.
A terraced landscape is proposed on the north-sloping terrain, inhabited by a mosaic of building blocks and green spaces. The planned structures rise towards the South, peaking in the high-rise towers on Nelkenweg. In addition to the development plan, a detailed Design Guide has been developed, offering clear quality guidance for the design of the open spaces, facades, and ground floor frontages, as well as for the sustainability of building materials.
